If you stopped by Keppel & Kismet in July, you might have wondered if we'd somehow skipped a few pages on the calendar. Outside, Baltimore is doing what Baltimore does best in the summer. Snowball stands have long lines. Families are enjoying neighborhood pools. Vacation photos are filling our social feeds.

Inside the shop, though, we're thinking about gifting. Specifically, we're working on ideas for corporate gift boxes, personalized gifting for family and friends, the annual holiday thank you gifts.

Not because we're trying to rush past summer. Quite the opposite.

One of my favorite things about this season is that it invites us to slow down. To linger over dinner with friends. To sit on the porch early mornings and after the sun goes down. To take a weekend road trip or finally finish the book that's been waiting on the nightstand.

Ironically, that slower pace is exactly why Summer is one of the best times to think about the holidays.

The gifts people remember most usually aren't the most expensive. They're the ones that make someone pause and say, "You really thought about me."

A favorite quote engraved on a journal.

A tumbler with an inside joke only coworkers understand.

An ornament that marks a baby's first Christmas or celebrates a first home.

A thank-you gift for volunteers who reliably showed up all year long.

Those kinds of gifts don't happen by accident. They begin with paying attention to the people in our lives long before December arrives.

For many small businesses, nonprofits, schools, and organizations, Summer is when holiday planning quietly begins.

It's the time to ask questions like:

• Who do we want to thank this year?
• How can we recognize our employees in a meaningful way?
• What gift reflects who we are as an organization?
• How can we support small businesses while giving something people will genuinely use?

Planning now doesn't make the holidays come any faster. It simply creates room to be more thoughtful when it does.

I remember the first time I found myself standing in Camp Small, Baltimore City Department of Forestry, surrounded by stacks of walnut, maple, oak, and more, harvested from trees that once shaded Baltimore streets. I was there selecting boards that will eventually become cutting boards and charcuterie boards for Keppel & Kismet.

As I looked around, I couldn't help but wonder where each piece of wood would end up.

One board might become a wedding gift engraved with a new family's name. Another might celebrate a first home. Another could become the centerpiece of a family's Christmas table for years to come.

That's one of my favorite parts of this work.

Long before the laser begins engraving, before the ribbon is tied, before a gift is unwrapped, every piece already has a story. Sometimes that story begins with a tree that spent decades growing in our own city.

When we choose materials, we're not just thinking about what will look beautiful. We're thinking about the moments they'll become part of—the conversations around the table, the milestones they'll commemorate, and the people they'll bring together.

That's why we're already thinking about the holidays.

Not because the high holiday season is around the corner, but because meaningful gifts are never rushed. They begin with intention.

The best gifts don't begin with shopping. They begin with noticing the people around us.
