’Tis the Season of Gathering & Gifting

’Tis the Season of Gathering & Gifting

The air is crisper, the leaves are turning, and calendars are filling up with the gatherings that make fall feel like fall: book club nights, office celebrations, family get-togethers, and friends finally setting a date.

As the holidays get closer, the gift list starts to grow too.

At Keppel & Kismet, our Baltimore creative workshop and gift boutique is built for both: a welcoming place to gather and make something together, and a shop filled with thoughtful gifts for the people in your circle.

There is something about fall that makes us want to gather.

Maybe it's because summer has scattered us in a dozen different directions, or because we know the holidays are coming and the year suddenly feels shorter. Whatever the reason, this is the time of year when I start hearing some version of, "We really need to get everybody together."

I love that.

Keppel & Kismet was created around the idea that connection doesn't always have to be complicated. Sometimes you just need a table, something to make, and a reason to show up.

Why Gather Around a Creative Workshop?

A group workshop gives everyone something to do besides small talk. There's something about sitting around a table and working with your hands that makes conversation come a little easier.

It's one of the reasons I love watching people settle into a workshop at Keppel & Kismet.

Hands busy, conversation easy. Working on a project side by side takes some of the pressure off. Before long, people are talking, laughing, comparing projects, asking each other for opinions, and occasionally borrowing somebody else's paint color.

Everyone leaves with something. Each person walks out with a finished piece they made themselves. Sometimes the project goes straight home. Sometimes it becomes a gift for someone else.

No hosting. No cleanup. We set the table, provide the supplies, and guide the project. You get to enjoy your people without wondering who is going to wash all those glasses afterward.

No experience needed. Our creative workshops are designed to welcome beginners. You don't have to consider yourself "crafty" to participate.

It's local. Gathering at Keppel & Kismet supports a Baltimore small business as well as the independent makers whose work you'll find throughout our shop.

Who Gathers With Us?

Holiday private workshop in our Baltimore workshop

We've welcomed all kinds of groups around our workshop tables.

Friend groups looking for a night out that isn't another dinner reservation.

Book clubs wanting to make their regular gathering a little different or celebrate the end of another year of reading together.

Coworkers and teams looking for team-building activities in Baltimore or a more creative alternative to the traditional office holiday party.

Families looking for something everyone can do together during a holiday visit.

And then there are the cookie-swap crews, craft circles, neighborhood groups, birthday groups and "we haven't seen each other in way too long" groups.

That last one may be my favorite.

You don't really need an occasion to gather. Sometimes gathering is the occasion.

What Do You Bring When Everyone Is Gathering?

Gathering season also brings one of those lovely little dilemmas:

What do I bring?

Sometimes it's a host gift. Sometimes you're buying for six book club friends without wanting to spend a small fortune. Sometimes you're responsible for thanking an entire team.

My rule is simple: the gift doesn't have to be big. It should feel like you thought about the person receiving it.

Here are a few places to start.

Corporate Gifts for Clients, Employees & New Hires

Corporate gifting doesn't have to mean another logo-covered promotional item.

A thoughtfully selected gift can welcome a new employee, recognize someone for a job well done, thank an important client, or mark a significant milestone.

Personalized and engraved gifts require a little more planning than something pulled from a shelf. Starting early gives us time to get the details right, from names and logos to materials and packaging.

Custom drink ware, engraved journals, cutting and charcuterie boards, curated gift sets, and personalized pieces can all become meaningful business gifts when they're selected with the recipient in mind.

Gifts for Friend Groups

Sometimes you want everyone to receive something similar without giving everyone exactly the same thing.

Look for coordinated gifts with a personal touch, small luxuries people might not buy for themselves, or pieces made by Baltimore-area makers.

A thoughtful gift doesn't have to come with a thoughtful-gift-sized price tag, either. Our under-$50 selection is a good place to start when you're buying for several people.

Gifts for Book Clubs

Books are the obvious answer, but they're certainly not the only answer.

Think bookmarks, journals, mugs, small personalized gifts, or something inspired by a book you've read together.

Or skip exchanging gifts altogether and turn your final book club meeting of the year into a workshop. Everyone gets the experience of being together and goes home with something they made.

Gifts for Cookie Swaps and Holiday Hosts

If someone has cleaned the house, made food, invited everyone over and is going to deal with the aftermath when you leave, bring that person something. I'm just saying.

An engraved cutting or charcuterie board can become part of their holiday entertaining for years. A candle, small serving piece, kitchen accessory, or locally made gift also makes an easy host gift.

And if your cookie swap includes individual boxes for everyone, tuck a small gift or personalized tag in with the cookies.

And Everyone Else Who Shows Up

Teachers. Coaches. Neighbors. Volunteers. Mentors. The person who checks on you. The person who always remembers your birthday. The person who helped when you didn't even have to ask.

The holidays give us a beautiful excuse to acknowledge the people who show up for us throughout the year.

Gift wrap is available in the shop, so your gifts can leave Keppel & Kismet ready to give.

A Few Tips for Planning Group Gifts

If you're buying for several people, a little planning makes everything easier.

Set a per-person budget first. It narrows your choices quickly and helps you decide where personalization makes sense.

Decide on personalization early. Names, monograms, logos, and custom engraving require additional production time.

Choose one point person. Someone needs to collect names, spellings, sizes, addresses and final quantities. Trust me on this one.

Order before the holiday rush. Fall is our busiest season for custom orders. Starting early gives you more options and gives us the time to create your gifts well.

And please, please double-check the spelling of everyone's name before sending your list. A laser is many wonderful things. An eraser is not one of them.

Most of all, make time to gather.

The calendar will fill up. The shopping list will get longer. December will arrive approximately seventeen minutes after Halloween.

But the people around the table?

They're the part worth remembering.

A Thought to Carry With You

The gathering doesn't have to be elaborate, and the gift doesn't have to be expensive. Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can give someone is a reason to come to the table.

Until next time,
